My brother-in-law and his girlfriend were in town last week and they stayed at our place. Currently, they both live in DC and usually come back to ABQ at least once a year. The last time they were here they ate at Five Star Burgers for the first time and it was magic (they’ve been to BRG, Shake Shack, Bobby’s Burger Palace, and he grinds his own meat for homemade burgers). In fact they were yearning for a reunion with the green chile burger at Five Star Burgers so we took them there for dinner. It’s been our “steady” burger joint since it opened in 2010 and is well-known for its Green Chile Cheeseburger. The setting is casual so it’s a great place for all ages, located in a shopping strip with probably one of the best views of the Sandia Mountains in town.
Each of us has a favorite- my husband the Green Chile Cheeseburger, my son and daughter the 5 Star Burger, and myself the 5 Star Turkey Burger. My brother-in-law and girlfriend decided on the Taos Burger for this visit. The Taos Burger is a green chile burger but dressed in a different way. This burger has fried whole green chiles and BBQ sauce; I imagine someone would go for this instead of the Green Chile Cheeseburger if they were in a hot and smokey mood. I think I will try this burger the next time because just the look and smell of it made me want to grab the burger for a bite. That thought lasted only a few seconds because my turkey burger came; my brother-in-law began lusting over it and stated that he was going to order the turkey next time.
Even though the Turkey Burger is not beef, it is just as seductive. The Turkey Burger presents itself like all the other burgers here- on a brioche bun; nothing embraces a burger better than a buttery brioche. The patty is big…round…and juicy. One can see, smell and taste the sage. The best part of the combo is the chutney; you have a choice of either cranberry or peach. The sweet, tangy and spicy flavors of the chutney makes for a very sensuous experience.
The menu offers the usual sides of fries, onion rings and shakes that complete the dining experience. But we have the hots for the sweet potato fries served with green chile mayo!
Tip: Five Star Burgers features a Burger of the Month- This month it’s the French Burger with glazed onions, gruyère cheese and dijon mayo. By the way, May is National Hamburger Month! So go and have your own fling with a burger from Five Star Burgers!
